Are You Afraid of Success?
You’ve heard of fear of failure. That’s when you want to try something different and a little voice steps in and says, “What happens if it doesn’t work?” As women, we sometimes don’t even try because we expect failure or we think other people will think we’re foolish.
Fear of failure though may not be the real reason you choose to stay in the same place in life. You may actually have a fear of success. Yes, that’s right, success.
Fear of Success
When you try something and fail, then you go back to doing the same thing. You most likely are not happy, but at least you’re back in your comfort zone.
You see, when you want to try something new or do things differently, then you are diving into uncharted waters and that can be scary, right?
Let’s say, for instance, you work in the corporate world and you want to start your own business. If you start your own business however, what does that look like? Will you have financial pressures? Will you be able to handle the workload if the business takes off? Will you be able to balance your own business and a family? Your head is buzzing, you’re actually scared you might be successful!
These may be questions that are running through your mind and you don’t have an answer. But. If you stay where you are, you know the outcome, it’s comfortable, even if it’s undesirable. So nothing changes, and you are unhappy.
Self-Sabotage
One of the worst things we can do to ourselves is self-sabotage. Self-sabotage is the negative self-talk that we tell ourselves when we think about doing something good for ourselves. Your inner critic takes over and talks you out of doing something that can positively impact your life.
Negative self-talk usually has roots in childhood. You may have had a critical parent or teacher. In adulthood, you may have been involved in a bad relationship that reinforced the negative feelings you have about yourself.
How To Move Out of Negative Thought Patterns
In order to get rid of your fear of being successful, there are things you can do to help minimize the negative self-talk and realize you are worthy of success.
- Before you start your day, look in the mirror and repeat some positive affirmations to yourself
- Learn to recognize your inner-critic so you can put a stop to it
- Give your critic and alter-ego so it stops being a part of you
- Your thoughts are not always the reality, recognize the reality
There is no magic potion to stop you from sabotaging your success. Learning to recognize it is the most important step. Next time you’re confronted with something new, and overcome your fear of failure, take a good look at your fear of success and why it may be stopping you from becoming what you are meant to be.
